Camping In West Virginia? 4 Of The Best State Parks And Outdoor Hotspots To Check Out

If you’re on the hunt for somewhere to take your next epic camping trip, look no further than West Virginia.

And sure, you might be scratching your head wondering “why West Virginia?” Well, consider the following reasons the Mountain State is the perfect place to visit:

  • Perhaps a no-brainer, West Virginia offers some of the best mountain views, hikes and photo-ops in the country (they don’t call it the Mountain State for nothing)
  • The state’s incredibly rich history, including its status as a key border state during the Civil War and status as a mining hub (resulting in a number of mysterious mining ghost towns through the state for out-of-towners to explore)
  • West Virginia likewise offers a unique taste of the South, especially given its close proximity to the likes of Ohio, Pennsylvania and Maryland

Simply put, the joys of traditional southern camping combined with gorgeous mountain views make its state parks a prime attraction to adventurers. That’s why you see so many RVs and tent campers passing through to see the state to its fullest extent.

Along with finding an RV rental in West Virginia or an old-school tent campground, there are tons of amazing state parks and forests sprinkled throughout the state to check out. Whether you’re looking for somewhere to set up camp or simply plan out your West Virginia adventure, definitely mark these spots on your map.

Blackwater Falls State Park

Arguably one of the state’s biggest attractions for nature lovers, the breathtaking 62-foot cascade that gives the park its namesake is something that needs to be seen to be believed. There’s a reason why the park is one of the top-photographed spots in the state: definitely worth checking out for a day trip if you can’t score a camping reservation here.

Grandview State Park

Perfect for the kids, this park offers miles of trails to explore, all of which provide prime viewing for local wildlife, including deer, bats and box turtles. Between its easy-to-navigate trails, great view of New Gorge and accommodations for visitors such as restrooms and picnic areas, Grandview is totally family friendly.

Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park

While only history buffs might be familiar with the Battle of Droop Mountain, visitors from all walks of life can appreciate the view of this stellar state park which is part of the Civil War Discovery Trail. Although proper camping isn’t available at this spot, it’s a must-see for its Civil War relics and lookout tower alone.

Seneca State Forest

Located near the previously noted Droop Mountain Battlefield, the state’s oldest forest is the perfect getaway spot for spending some quality time outdoors. In addition to outdoor activities such as hunting, biking and fishing, visitors should most definitely check out the forest massive 65-foot tall for a killer view.

You may not hear much about West Virginia in the news, but it’s a wonderful vacation spot for nearby neighbors and out-of-towners who love the great outdoors. No matter what sort of adventure you’re looking for, you’ll definitely be able to find it in the Mountain State.
